Jack Paphitis

Software Engineer | BAE Systems

After completing my Maths degree from the University of Exeter, I started applying for jobs in the tech industry in early 2020. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it felt like there were no jobs going – and if there were, it was hard to even get an email back saying you’d been unsuccessful. I’d been renting in London for a few months with no income, which was incredibly tough. So I visited my local Job Centre, and that’s where I first learned about Making The Leap.

I enrolled on the ACE Programme – which was running virtually during the pandemic – in September 2020. During the workshop, Natalie pushed us really hard – if you can handle those role play situations, you can absolutely manage a job interview or difficult workplace conversations. And the feedback and encouragement I got during the workshop really helped me to get my confidence back.

Making The Leap has played a huge role in getting me into work. I think the most impactful thing was the introduction to my Career Champion, Chris, who volunteers with the charity. After the workshop, we had weekly meetings over the phone, when we would set goals for the week and look at jobs to apply for. Chris even helped me out with personal things – like encouraging me to go to the gym and get into running – which really helped me develop a positive mindset. Throughout that time, Natalie and Krupa were also just an email away, if I had any questions or needed any help at all.

I learned about the graduate scheme at BAE Systems, and was really intrigued by it. So I worked with Chris on my CV, to really make sure I was showcasing my skills, and we did lots of interview practice as I progressed through the application stages. I got an offer to join the graduate scheme, and even though it was a two-year scheme, I progressed to a full software engineer role after 18 months. I had to give an hour-long presentation on why I should compete the graduate scheme early – I remember telling Krupa about that, and she offered support with it at the time. I wasn’t able to take her up on it for security reasons, but I really appreciated that level of ongoing support and engagement from Making The Leap.

I’m so passionate about what Making The Leap does. Depending on your background, you won’t necessarily know about all these skills you need to succeed in the world of work. I really learned the power of networking through Making The Leap, and so I’m hoping to get more involved in the Fellows Board going forward. It will be a great way to give back, and to inspire more young people to keep believing in themselves.
