Leadership

Though direct delivery in London is at our core, we use what we learn to advocate for the importance of social mobility practice in UK businesses, and above all encourage action. We organise the UK Social Mobility Awards, run Social Mobility Day and produce the Social Mobility Podcast and The Social Mobility List, as well as providing bespoke support for companies looking to understand social mobility in their sector.

A year-long programme of events, the UK Social Mobility Awards were established to make the advancement of social mobility a key part of how UK organisations are run. Through encouraging social mobility activity, thought leadership and advocacy, the UK Social Mobility Awards have become firmly established in the business calendar.

Growing from strength to strength, the UK Social Mobility Awards has seen the involvement of over 500 different organisations, and offers a range of sponsorship opportunities – an excellent way to position your organisation as a champion of social mobility.

“How can UK business step up and support change? The annual SOMO Awards, the UK’s annual social mobility ‘Oscars’, highlight the work done by organisations actively supporting working class talent… the awards recognise individuals and organisations with effective social mobility pathways.”

It’s vital that businesses are talking about social mobility, and the Social Mobility Business Seminar is a catalyst for that discussion.

Part of the UK Social Mobility Awards leadership initiative focused on advancing social mobility, each year representatives of business and organisations come together to discuss social mobility and its positive impact. The last Social Mobility Business Seminar took place in March 2024, inspiring individuals and organisations to begin, continue, or take the lead in their social mobility journeys.

We welcomed insightful speakers and panelists from the private sector who shared ways they are actively advancing social mobility. All our speakers communicated passionately for business leaders to ‘do more’ to widen the gate, and create equitable opportunities for individuals from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

We’re looking forward to the next Business Seminar in 2025.

Social Mobility Day is an initiative organised by Making The Leap, to help raise awareness of social mobility and encourage organisations to share social mobility stories. In recent years, we have seen more organisations implementing socio-economic diversity, equity, and inclusion strands in their strategic direction, and striving to make an impactful change. Social Mobility Day is a time for these achievements to be celebrated.

Launched in 2022 and taking place annually in June, Social Mobility Day is an opportunity for organisations across the UK to join this growing movement.

The Social Mobility List, in partnership with bp, is a groundbreaking new publication focused on highlighting the key contributors and initiatives that are driving social mobility in the UK. This publication is the first of its kind and is the latest initiative from social mobility charity Making The Leap.

The Social Mobility List features a comprehensive overview of individuals, charities, and companies making significant strides in advancing social mobility across the UK. This annual publication is a key resource for stakeholders across the social mobility ecosystem, from policymakers to business leaders, educational institutions, and the wider public.

There are 10 Movers and Shakers highlighted, who across 2024 have actively made an impact in the field of social mobility through policy, advocacy, innovation or direct action.

Joining the Movers and Shakers, the List celebrates 56 different organisations across 12 categories as well as 18 individuals across a further three categories, and five charities leading the way in social mobility.

Many charities exist to tackle issues that disproportionately affect Black and other racialised minority communities. However, people from those communities are often underrepresented as trustees, and in senior positions, of those charities.

Black Charity Leaders is an initiative, organised by Making The Leap, that champions racialised minority professionals within their career in the charity sector. We provide networking, masterclasses, coaching, training and more, to equip these leaders.

We want to be an increasing part of the solution at leadership level and support a pipeline of talent in the charity sector.
