Making The Leap designs and delivers a successful event to raise the aspirations of hundreds of school pupils.

Evidence suggests that the aspirations you form as a teenager can have significant impact on your educational attainment and future career. Young people are more likely to achieve academically and beyond when they develop ambitious and achievable aspirations, and inspiration and information are key factors in forming them.[1]

‘I feel like I might have potential and I shouldn’t limit myself’– Year 12 pupil

Our event on 13-14th October aimed to raise the aspirations of Southwark schoolchildren by introducing them to Russell Group universities, empowering them with information and inspiring them to believe that these elite institutions were within their reach. The event, which was held in the stunning Dutch Hall in the City, was attended by universities of Cambridge, Oxford, York, Exeter, Durham, Leeds, LSE, King’s College, Sheffield, Southampton, Birkbeck, Royal Holloway and SOAS. Pupils also had the opportunity to speak to PwC to find out about one of the best higher-level apprenticeships around, as well as some fantastic apprenticeships and scholarships offered by Southwark Council, who sponsored the event. The event was attended by students from eight Southwark schools, of various year groups ranging from 8-13, and the room was buzzing with excitement as the children fired their questions at the university representatives.
