UK Social Mobility Awards 2018 – Winners

The UK Social Mobility Awards, in association with Capita, are launching for the third year with a Social Mobility Business Seminar, sponsored by Milkround. The seminar will bring organisations interested in entering the 2019 awards together with those developing social mobility initiatives and seeking best practice guidance.

The seminar will include a keynote speech and panel discussion with senior figures from business and government. Additionally the winners’ case study report for the 2018 awards, compiled by CSI Nuffield, will be distributed.

Nadhim Zahawi MP – Parliamentary Undersecretary for Children and Families
Nadhim Zahawi was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Education on 9 January 2018 and was elected as Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon in May 2010. The minister’s responsibilities include: children’s social care including child protection, children in care, adoption, care leavers, social work, local authority performance and family law; special educational needs including high needs funding; education policy in response to the race disparity audit; safeguarding in schools; disadvantaged pupils – including pupil premium and pupil premium plus; school sport, healthy pupils and school food, including free school meals; early years policy including inspection, regulation and literacy and numeracy; childcare policy, inspection and regulation; delivery of 30 hours free childcare offer; social mobility including opportunity areas; and DfE contribution to cross-government work to tackle rough sleeping.

Matthew Coats – Director General for EU Exit Implementation, Cabinet Office
As Director General for EU Exit Implementation, Matthew reports jointly into Cabinet Office and DExEU.

Prior to this role, Matthew was the Chief Operating Officer for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), leading departmental strategy and transformation. Matthew joined the MoJ in 2012 as Chief Executive of the Legal Services Commission, where he led the transition to the Legal Aid Agency. He was also the MoJ Social Mobility Champion.

Prior to joining the MoJ Matthew was Head of UK Border Force. His other roles included: Head of Immigration at the UK Border Agency; Strategic Director for Asylum at the Home Office; and Head of Secondary Care at the Department of Health – where he was policy lead for emergency care, elective care and diagnostics. He also spent 12 years in the NHS as a hospital manager.

 

Sarah Moore – Deals People Partner, PwC
Sarah is a Partner in the People and Organization practice at PwC which brings together an un-matched combination of 10,000 people with industry, business, talent, strategy, HR, analytics and technology expertise in one team across 138 countries.

Sarah is a Partner in the People in Deals UK practice within People and Organization. People in Deals supports clients in the Human Resource aspects of Acquisitions, Dispositions and Reorganizations. People in Deals adds value at each stage of the Deal process:
Pre-deal – addressing executive compensation, pension and HR cost allocation issues in due diligence.
Post-deal – identify integration challenges early, develop solutions to address them, align post-deal people strategies with the overall company strategy and drive successful implementation.

Sarah has over 10 years of experience in the human resource consulting field, leading teams to provide services to global clients across the private sector. Sarah’s areas of expertise are HR strategy, workforce restructuring, people implications of pre and post deal integration, HR function transformation and building capability.

 

Steven Cooper – CEO, C. Hoare & Co and Commissioner, Social Mobility Commission
Within his 32 years in the banking industry, Steven was most recently CEO of Barclaycard Business Solutions, managing the payments division for Barclaycard including Merchant Acquiring, Commercial Payments and Sales Finance. Prior to this, he was CEO of Personal Banking at Barclays for both UK and Europe, where he gained a wealth of experience in the rapidly changing landscape of consumer banking with digital technology and data. He has also led UK Business Banking and businesses for Barclays in Africa, India and Offshore locations.

Steven sits on a number of advisory boards, including being a commissioner for the social mobility commission. Steven is a NED at Robert Walters PLC and the FSCS and is an Alumni of Harvard Business Schools.

 

Yasmine Chinwala – Partner, New Financial LLP
Yasmine Chinwala is a partner at capital markets think tank New Financial, which launched in September 2014. New Financial contributed data to the government-backed Gadhia Review of senior women in UK financial services and is working with HM Treasury to conduct an annual review of the Women in Finance Charter to monitor the progress of signatories. She is also chair of the Women in Finance Charter Industry Board.

Yasmine firmly believes that diversity in its broadest sense is not only an essential part of running a sustainable business but a fundamental part of addressing cultural change. She leads New Financial’s diversity and culture programme. Our research covers ground-breaking work on diversity disclosure, diversity from an investor’s perspective, and measuring female representation on boards and executive committees across financial markets. Our most recent research includes diversity and culture, diversity in portfolio management and unique analysis of gender pay gap data in UK financial services.

Yasmine started her career as a financial journalist. She worked for industry weekly Financial News for 10 years, starting out as a reporter before joining the online editing team in London and New York. From 2008-2013 she ran FN’s features desk, in charge of the publication’s flagship FN100 Most Influential, FN100 Women and Rising Stars lists. She has a BSc in Economics from the LSE and a keen interest in behavioural economics and organisational psychology.
